Movement Disorders Program

Under the co-direction of renowned neurosurgeon, Sandeep Kunwar, MD, and accomplished neurologist Charan Singh, MD, our program can achieve dramatic results for patients with uncontrollable tremors using revolutionary deep brain stimulation technology.

Conditions We Treat

The Movement Disorders Program offers patients relief from movement disorders, including:

  • Parkinson's disease
  • Essential tremors

Alternative treatment options for movement disorders using Gamma Knife® technology are evolving rapidly. Patients may soon benefit from expanded treatment for Parkinson's disease, essential tremors, and epilepsy.

Improved Quality of Life

Patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) or other movement disorder conditions may experience symptoms that include tremors, muscle rigidity, a slowing of physical movement (bradykinesia) and, in extreme cases, a loss of physical movement (akinesia). Most movement disorders are both chronic and progressive.

Treating patients with movement disorders using deep brain stimulation markedly improves quality of life by returning patients to their normal activities, such as feeding and dressing themselves independently. Many times, after deep brain stimulation treatment, patients' need for anti-tremor medications is reduced or eliminated altogether.

How the Technology Works

Our physicians use deep brain stimulation technology to transmit mild electrical currents, which intercept and block the brain signals that produce uncontrollable shaking.

To target these brain signals, a wire lead with four electrodes at the tip is implanted into the thalamus area of the brain, which plays a major role in the body's motor functions. The wire runs under the skin to a battery-operated pulse generator implanted near the collarbone. Our specialists program the unit to transmit continuous electrical pulses to the brain, suppressing tremors caused by PD and other disorders.
