College and Adult Volunteer Program

College Student Volunteer Requirements: (Accepting College Students all year round)

  • Must be 18 years old (and graduated High School) and up to 26 years of age and/or enrolled full time in college
  • Students typically meet application requirements which includes background checks and medical requirements
  • Students are required to volunteer a minimum of 40 hours within a year before receiving an Exemplar Letter or validation of volunteer hours
  • One-time non-application fee of $20 charged at time of picking up the Volunteer Application Packet

  • Nurses Unit Assist (NUA)/ Emergency Room Assist program
  • Surgery Liaison program
  • Gift shop
  • Lobby team volunteers
  • Musician Volunteer Program (piano/violin/flute) in Main Hospital lobby
  • Pet Dog Therapy- program is called "WOOF"- Special requirements before entering this program.
  • Cuddler Program- Special requirements before entering this program.
  • "No One Dies Alone" (NODA)- Special requirements before entering program.
  • Special Projects

College and Adult Application Packets:

  • Age - Prospective College volunteers begins at 18 years of age up (and graduated high school) to 26 years old and enrolled in College. ONLY PROSPECTIVE VOLUNTEERS CAN PICK UP THE APPLICATION.
  • Age - Prospective Adult volunteers begin at 26 years old and older OR 18 years and older and not enrolled in College. ONLY PROSPECTIVE VOLUNTEERS CAN PICK UP THE APPLICATION
  • Volunteer applications are available for college and adults by picking up the application at the Volunteer Services office located at 2500 Mowry Ave., suite 100, Fremont, California.
  • Office hours are Monday to Friday from 10:00am to 4:30pm

Volunteer Application Fee for High School and College:

  • A non-refundable application fee of $20 is charged at the time of pick up of the volunteer application. Cash, credit card or checks made out to "Service League of Volunteers, Washington Hospital" are accepted in the Volunteer Services office.

Adult Fee:

  • Adult volunteers join the Service League and are charged yearly dues. First year dues will be collected at the orientation meeting. This minimal fee goes to fun events hosted by the Service League of Volunteers.

Health and Background Screening: - In order to provide the best care for our patients, all volunteers are screened and must complete medical requirements through our Employee Health Services (free of charge). Screenings may take up to two months to complete. Proof of immunization to rubella and varicella (chicken pox) and an annual tuberculin skin test are required. Volunteers who have any limitations are required to provide a doctor's statement of release, noting any restrictions.

  • Note: A background screening is mandatory for adult volunteers and college volunteers. We will provide you a link to complete, once the adult application is filled out and turned in. WHHS will absorb the cost of the background screening.
  • Uniforms - Volunteers must wear the Washington Hospital Service League volunteer uniform and name badge while volunteering.

Orientation - After submitting an application and completing the medical requirements, all accepted volunteers will be invited to a mandatory volunteer orientation in order to learn about the Hospital's mandatory safety program, policies and procedures. These are held as needed.
