A Special Care Nursery for Infants’ Special Needs

Author: Jacquelyn Kay Chyu, MD

Maternal & Fetal Medicine

The Washington Prenatal Diagnostic Center (PDC) is a collaboration between USCF Health and the Washington Hospital Healthcare System, which opened its services to our community in July 2017. It was developed with the specific purpose of giving families in the Tri-City Area easy access to the existing excellence of obstetric services in this community in combination with the advanced resources of one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers, without having to venture far from home, work and family.

Using state-of-the-art imaging technologies, we can examine babies as they develop, assess their growth and health, screen for genetic anomalies, and do everything possible to treat conditions that might be discovered. In collaboration with the Fetal Treatment Center at UCSF, many of the evaluations and treatments that were previously available only after birth are now available to a fetus in the womb, using highly advanced treatment and imaging technologies.

Our compassionate staff is dedicated to improving outcomes for mother and fetus alike. Consultations and examinations in our PDC are provided by board-certified specialists in Maternal-Fetal Medicine and by pediatric cardiologists who specialize in fetal heart conditions. Our team of physician geneticists and genetic counselors specializes in detecting and optimizing the management of inherited illnesses, and guides our patients through the maze of available tests and the interpretation of their results. Our sonographers are highly trained in fetal imaging and our dedicated medical assistants exclusively assist in the provision of care for pregnant patients.

Should advanced interventions become necessary during pregnancy, we coordinate the referral to UCSF and continue to follow-up with our patients as they receive care at the academic center. The UCSF Fetal Treatment Center is an integrated medical service of maternal-fetal medicine specialists, geneticists, radiologists, neonatologists, as well as pediatric and fetal surgical subspecialists. Our collaboration makes the most advanced medical care seamlessly available to our community.
