The Pediatric Unit at Washington Hospital provides care for sick children ranging in age from birth to 18 years of age. The Pediatric Team focuses on providing patients in our community with outstanding evidence-based care in a safe environment. This care is provided for by Pediatric Hospitalists who are Board Certified in Pediatrics and who are available around the clock to attend to pediatric emergencies anywhere in the hospital.

The Pediatric Unit is a 12-bed unit located on the third floor of the main hospital building. There is a treatment room specially equipped for any procedures that your child may need. There is also a play area set aside for toddlers and other age appropriate books, toys and videos. Most Pediatric patients are taken care of by the Pediatric hospitalist team who provide coverage at Washington Hospital through a partnership with Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford University.

Other members of the health care team include pediatric nurses, pharmacists, social workers and respiratory therapists who have specialized training in Pediatrics. A few dedicated Pediatric sub-specialists are available at Washington Hospital and when necessary, your physician may work in close conjunction with sub-specialists at Lucille Packard Children’s Hospital. Importantly, the Pediatric hospitalists work in close conjunction your child’s primary doctor so that there is continuity in your child’s care.

Efforts to institute family centered care (provide link) on the Pediatric unit are in progress. Detailed discharging planning for asthmatic patients are available and include focused asthma education and a tailored asthma action plan based on your child’s past and present condition. Currently, Washington hospital’s birthing center is in the process of becoming family friendly (provide link). Lactation consultants provide services during the day for new mothers whose babies are admitted to the pediatric unit.
