Healthgrades Names Washington Hospital Healthcare System One of America’s 50 Best for Outpatient Orthopedic Surgery and One of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Outpatient Joint Replacement

Washington Hospital Healthcare System Among Top 5% Nationwide for Outpatient Orthopedic Surgery and Outpatient Joint Replacement including 5-Star Distinctions for Outpatient Total Knee Replacement, Outpatient Total Hip Replacement, and Outpatient Back and Neck Surgery.

Fremont, CA – February 15, 2024 – Washington Hospital Healthcare System announced today that it has been recognized as one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Outpatient Orthopedic Surgery and one of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Outpatient Joint Replacement by Healthgrades, the leading resource consumers use to find a hospital or doctor. These two achievements reflect the organization’s dedication to clinical excellence and distinguishes Washington Hospital Healthcare System as one of the nation’s leading hospitals for both outpatient orthopedic surgery and joint replacement. Washington Hospital Healthcare System is one of only 19 hospitals in the nation to receive both distinctions and the only hospital in the Bay Area1. Washington Hospital Healthcare System was also recognized with Five-Star Distinctions in Outpatient Total Knee Replacement, Outpatient Total Hip Replacement and Outpatient Back and Neck Surgery.

“Receiving recognition as one America’s 50 best hospitals for outpatient orthopedic surgery and outpatient joint replacement is evidence of Washington Hospital Healthcare System as a premiere destination for back and neck surgery, total hip replacement and total knee replacement,” said Kimberly Hartz, chief executive officer of Washington Hospital Healthcare System. “Being among the top 5% in the nation and the only hospital in the Bay Area recognizes our exceptional orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons. Both of these distinctions underscore the value of placing the patient at the center of our care, improving practice through evidence based quality principles, and investing in the advancement of medical practice.”

To identify the top-performing hospitals for outpatient orthopedic surgery and outpatient joint replacement, Healthgrades analyzed patient outcomes at short-term acute care facilities nationwide that offer critical orthopedic procedures in an outpatient environment, including back and neck surgery, knee replacement, hip replacement, and rotator cuff surgery.

“We have a wealth of clinical experience in the field of joint replacement as a result of our narrow focus and high volume of patients,” said John Dearborn, MD, Medical Co-director of the Institute for Joint Restoration and Research (IJRR) at Washington Hospital Health System.

“Our teams specialize in minimally invasive hip and knee replacement with advanced technology and cutting-edge protocols so patients can recover faster and return home the same day as surgery,” said Alexander Sah, MD, Medical Co-director of the IJRR.”

Healthgrades’ analysis found that patients treated at hospitals that have been recognized for excellence in outpatient orthopedic surgery have a demonstrably better chance at a smooth recovery than those treated at hospitals that were not recognized by Healthgrades. In fact, between 2020 and 2022, patients treated at hospitals receiving the America’s 50 Best Hospitals for Outpatient Orthopedic Surgery Award™ had, on average, a 39.7% lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated at hospitals that did not receive the award.*

“Receiving 5-star ratings for outpatient back and neck surgery a few months after earning The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for Advanced Certification in Spine Surgery (ACSS) further solidifies WHHS as a center of excellence and innovation in the realm of spine surgery,” said Sandeep Kunwar, MD, Medical Director of the Bell Neurosciences Institute of Silicon Valley.

As outpatient surgical volumes continue to grow, Healthgrades is proud to offer the industry’s only outcomes-based outpatient ratings to help patients identify the best care for their needs. Consumers can visit Healthgrades.com to learn more about how Healthgrades measures hospital quality.

1The Bay Area is defined as Sonoma, Napa, Solano, Centra Costa, Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo, San Francisco and Marin counties. *Statistics are based on Healthgrades analysis of SAF data for years 2020 through 2022 and represent three-year estimates for Medicare patients only.
