Washington Hospital is proud to serve as a STEMI Receiving Center and Stroke Receiving Center for Alameda County. These important designations show we have the facilities, technology, and physicians to provide immediate diagnosis and treatment for severe heart attack and acute stroke victims in our Emergency Department.

An ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is a severe heart attack requiring immediate intervention. Heart attack symptoms for men and women include:

  • Chest discomfort, including pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain
  • Cold sweat
  • Discomfort or pain in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw, or stomach
  • Lightheadedness
  • Nausea
  • Shortness of breath
